How PGT Products Fail - and How We Fix Them
- PGT 5500 Series rollers flatten and drag. The 5500 slider uses a steel roller on an aluminum track, and after ten-plus years of Port St. Lucie humidity and sandy soil, those rollers wear flat on one side. The door still moves, but it takes shoulder weight to close it. We pull the panel, replace the roller assemblies with OEM or equivalent, and clean the track channel so it rolls with two fingers again.
- PGT WinGuard interlock seals crush at the meeting rail. WinGuard impact sliders have a heavy interlock where the panels meet, and if the door was installed slightly out of level, that seal compresses unevenly and starts tearing within a few seasons. The handle set screws on PGT’s lighter aluminum patio doors thread into soft metal, and repeated locking and unlocking eventually bores them out. The handle wiggles, then the latch stops catching. We replace the handle set and re-tap or reinforce the mounting points so the lock engages dead square.
- Roller housing brackets crack on PGT 7700 sliders. The 7700 is a heavier door, and when the track collects grit from St. Lucie’s sandy lots, the roller housings absorb the stress and crack at the corner mount. The door sags, the bottom rail scrapes, and homeowners think the frame warped. It didn’t. We replace the housings, set the panel height, and the door clears the track again.
- Weep holes clog and water migrates under the threshold. PGT slider frames drain through small weep holes at the base, and Port St. Lucie’s summer downpours push leaf debris and mill scale straight into them. Once clogged, water backs up inside the track and seeps under the threshold into the subfloor. We clear the weep system, check the threshold flashing, and re-bed the track where it’s needed.
